A Professional Atlanta Photographer's Journey to New Haven, CT
As a professional Atlanta event photographer, returning to my hometown of New Haven, CT, to capture the 11th Hill Neighborhood Festival was a truly special experience.
Event photography has it's traveling benefits, from capturing engaging events in Atlanta to documenting this vibrant Elm City event organized by the International Festival of Arts and Ideas.
The 11th Hill Neighborhood Festival: A Community Celebration
The Hill Neighborhood Festival is an annual event that brings together performers, DJs, vendors, and local residents for an afternoon of celebration and community.
This year’s festival, marking the 40th Anniversary of the Trowbridge Hip Hop Festival, was particularly meaningful as it honored Mr. Fred Harris, a local hero who has dedicated his life to social justice and community organizing.
The Vibrant Atmosphere of Trowbridge Square Historic District
Held in the Trowbridge Square Historic District, the festival provided a rich backdrop for event photography. This area, known as "The Hill," is New Haven’s most intact example of 19th-century working-class residential architecture.
The district's well-preserved modest houses and historical significance added a unique charm to the event, making it a photographer's dream location.
Honoring Fred Harris: A Hometown Hero
Fred Harris, a pivotal figure in the Hill neighborhood's history, was celebrated during the festival. Harris, now 85, led a grassroots movement for racial, educational, and housing justice in the 1960s.
He founded the Hill Parents Association (HPA) to address issues such as poor housing, unemployment, and rundown schools. Harris’s activism challenged New Haven's Urban Renewal programs, advocating for better living conditions for Black and brown residents.
During the festival, Harris was awarded the key to The Hill. The recognition of his work added a profound sense of history and purpose to the event.
Capturing the Festival: A Photographer's Perspective
The Groove at The Hill
The Hill Neighborhood Festival was an explosion of energy, color, and culture. Performers and DJs kept the crowd entertained while vendors provided resources, knowledge and fun for attendees to enjoy.
My goal was to capture the essence of the festival - the smiles, the interactions, and the vibrant community spirit. The dynamic performances and lively crowd provided endless opportunities for engaging and memorable photographs.
Trowbridge Park: A Historic Setting
The setting of Trowbridge Park, with its historical significance and picturesque 19th-century architecture, offered a unique backdrop for the festival.
The juxtaposition of modern festivities against a historic setting made for compelling images that highlighted the event's theme of reclaiming and celebrating community heritage.
A Journey of Professional Growth and Personal Connection
Returning to New Haven to capture the 11th Hill Neighborhood Festival was more than just a professional assignment; it was a journey of personal significance.
As a professional Atlanta photographer, I relish opportunities to travel, explore new settings, and document events that celebrate community and history.
This experience reinforced my commitment to creating impactful, evergreen photo assets that tell compelling stories and enhance brand strength.
Awesome! You are so talented. You know how to capture the moments that mean everything to the event and those taking part!
